As always, this year’s Huon Show was a great opportunity to catch up with people, meet new land holders and find out how we can help them with managing their properties, including promoting up and coming events such as the ‘Small Farm Planning Program’. The NRM South stall was a hive of activity with NRM Facilitator Tim Ackroyd and Robbie Gaffney from the State Government’s Wildlife Management Branch on hand to talk through a range of land management questions.
Robbie, who works with landowners and farmers to better manage wallabies and possums, had a range of equipment on display including wallaby-proof fencing – as well as practical tips for land owners on native animal management. The stall was a great place to get information on property management, bushcare and the wider environment, with lots of free goody bags of info given away. The ‘Guess the Weed’ quiz was a great hit and a selection of native Tasmanian plants were given gave to those who guessed the weeds correctly!
Biosecurity (the management of weeds, pests and diseases) was a strong theme for the day. The Huon Valley Council’s vehicle was- down trailer, used to keep vehicles and equipment clean, was part of a range of great resources on how land owners, bushwalkers, mountain bikers, fisherman and others can do their bit to reduce the spread of weeds, pests and diseases.
For those of you that went to the Show, we hope you had a great time!
