Election commitments secured for Tasmania’s NRMs

On the eve of our upcoming State election, Tasmania’s NRMs welcome the support for ongoing core funding commitments that we have received from all three major parties as well as select independents.

This is now the third consecutive state election where all major parties have committed support. This is an outcome that reflects the strength, credibility, and impact of the work being done across our regional NRM organisations. A huge thank you to our dedicated teams and partners whose evidence-based, outcomes-driven work has made our value clear.

TASMANIAN LIBERALS

Jeremy Rockliff recognised that Tasmania’s NRMs have long been valued as partners in delivering practical, science-based solutions that protect and enhance Tasmania’s unique environment. He reaffirmed the Liberals’ commitment to current levels of direct, indirect, and in-kind support for Tasmania’s NRM organisations beyond our current Deed.

“The achievements you’ve outlined – particularly the extraordinary leverage of $65 million in external investment over five years – are a testament to the effectiveness of your regional delivery model and the trust you’ve built with stakeholders across Tasmania and Australia. This is not only a return on investment for the State’s unique environments, but a powerful contribution to the resilience and prosperity of our regions.

The Government recognises the strategic importance of your work and the stability that core funding provides in enabling long-term planning and delivery

TASMANIAN GREENS

In highlighting the critical role that NRMs play in responding to future environmental challenges, Vica Bayley recognised the Tasmanian Greens strong support for Tasmania’s NRM organisations.

“In a climate and biodiversity crisis, it is more important than ever to invest in place-based, research-backed coordinated approaches to land and natural resource management.

Last election, we were proud to support an increase in core funding to all NRM groups to $544,000 per year per organisation.

The Tasmanian Greens support continued investment in NRM North, NRM South and Cradle Coast NRM, and indexation for core funding from 2026/27 and beyond.

We recognise the importance of regional NRM to Tasmania’s economic development, environmental resilience, community capacity building, and delivery of on-ground results.”

TASMANIAN LABOR

Janie Finlay MP reaffirmed Labor’s commitment to current levels of direct, indirect, and in-kind support for Tasmania’s NRM organisations beyond our current Deed.

“Tasmanian Labor acknowledges the regional NRM’s as key contributors to economic development and resilience, environmental outcomes, and overall Government priorities… We value the significant work done by Cradle Coast NRM, NRM North, and NRM South.”

– Janie Finlay, on behalf of Tasmanian Labor 15 July 2025

INDEPENDENTS

On behalf of Kristie Johnston, 26 June 2025:

“Kristie supports the valuable work of NRMs in Tasmania and is happy to support your requests for secure funding and recognition of the strategic role NRMs play in delivering the economic, environmental and other outcomes for Tasmania.”

-David O’Byrne 11 July 2025

“I recognise the importance of the three regional NRMs to delivering environmental programs and the need for ongoing government funding of these activities beyond 2026/27.

State Parliament is likely to again be governed in minority which places independents in an important position with a great capacity to lobby the State Government for positive change. It is critical that everyone has a platform to voice their issues and suggest potential solutions to the challenges being faced by Tasmania. If I am successful in my bid for re-election, I will act as a conduit between the Tasmanian community and the State Government, advocating for positive change to improve the lives of all Tasmanians.”

We welcome this recognition, positive feedback, and commitment to sustained funding that will enable us to continue our important ongoing work to support Tasmania’s economy, environment and communities.
